That includes protecting our data, but more importantly, protecting the trust people place in us every time they rely on land and property records.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A big part of the job is also making sure the business can move forward without friction. Security and IT\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0slow things down. They should give people the confidence to\u00a0operate, make decisions, and deliver for customers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Day to day, it spans a lot of areas from identity and access management to security operations, threat detection, compliance, AI governance, and the unglamorous but critical work of building a security culture across the company. I also spend a good amount of time at the intersection of IT operations and security, because those two worlds are converging quickly, and Teranet is well positioned to do that well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The role sits at the crossroads of technology, business risk, and people leadership.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what makes it interesting, and on some days, a bit messy in\u00a0a good way.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=\u00a0\u00bbWhat first drew you to a career in information security, and what has kept you passionate about it over the years? \u00a0\u00bb font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h4|text_align:left|color:%234c7a15″ google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb text_direction=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]Honestly, I was drawn in the way a lot of people of my generation were: curiosity about how systems work, and then the realization that understanding how something breaks is just as important as understanding how it runs. Security stuck because it forces you to think like an adversary while acting like a guardian, and that tension keeps you honest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What has kept me here is that information security never sits still. The problems you solve today are not the ones\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be dealing with a year from now. Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0ransomware, supply chain attacks, AI-driven threats, or the rise of non-human identities across enterprise environments, each wave brings a different kind of complexity. You\u00a0have to\u00a0keep\u00a0learning\u00a0or you fall behind, and I like that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s\u00a0also a sense of purpose to the work. Security\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0abstract. When\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0done well, real people are protected. When it\u00a0isn\u2019t, the impact is immediate and tangible: disruption, loss of trust, and sometimes worse.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what keeps it grounded, especially in sectors like ours where public confidence really matters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=\u00a0\u00bbSince joining Teranet, what has stood out to you most about the role trust and security play in the property ecosystem?\u00a0\u00bb font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h4|text_align:left|color:%234c7a15″ google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb text_direction=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]Property transactions are some of the most significant financial and legal events in a person\u2019s life. When someone buys a home, refinances, or transfers title,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0placing a lot of trust in the systems and institutions behind those transactions. Teranet sits right at the core of that infrastructure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What stood out to me early on was how deeply that responsibility is felt across Teranet, not just in IT or information security. It shows up in how our people approach their work, the care that goes into data integrity, and how seriously risks to the registry are taken.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0not something you build through policy.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0cultural\u00a0here at Teranet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fraud landscape in the property sector has also sharpened my perspective. Title fraud, mortgage fraud, and identity-driven property crime are not theoretical in Canada.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0active.\u00a0Especially after moderating\u00a0<\/span>Teranet\u00a0Market Insight Forum<\/span><\/a>\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen\u00a0firsthand\u00a0how Teranet, regulators, legal professionals, and financial institutions all need to work together to stay ahead of those threats.\u00a0It\u00a0reinforced that security in this space is very much a team sport.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=\u00a0\u00bbYou\u2019ve spoken about resilience as something that must be built into day-to-day operations, not just plans on paper. Real resilience shows up in small, repeatable moments: how quickly your team detects an anomaly at two in the morning, whether your runbooks are current enough to be useful under pressure, and whether people have practiced the decisions they\u2019ll need to make instead of facing them for the first time in the middle of an incident.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In practice, it means investing in detection and response capabilities that are built into operations, not bolted on. It means running tabletop exercises that include leadership, not just the\u00a0IT and\u00a0security teams. It means measuring recovery time against what\u00a0actually happens, not\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0written on a slide. And it means creating an environment where people feel empowered to escalate and act, because hesitation during an incident is a real risk.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re also modernizing the way we watch for and respond to threats at Teranet. Better tools give us better visibility, but it\u2019s the discipline around how we use them that actually builds resilience over time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=\u00a0\u00bbAs AI becomes more embedded in business operations, what do you think is most important for organizations to keep in mind when it comes to security and trust? \u00a0\u00bb font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h4|text_align:left|color:%234c7a15″ google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb text_direction=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]The first thing is that AI\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0change the fundamentals of\u00a0security. It amplifies them. If your identity controls are weak, AI agents working on behalf of users will expose that. If your data governance is unclear, AI will ingest and act on data it\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0have access to.\u00a0So\u00a0the basics still matter,\u00a0maybe more\u00a0than ever.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, companies need to treat AI governance as a security function, not just an ethics or compliance checkbox. That starts with understanding where AI is\u00a0actually operating\u00a0in your environment, including the shadow use you\u00a0probably don\u2019t\u00a0have visibility into yet, what data it can access, and who is accountable when something goes wrong. Non-human identities are already one of the fastest-growing attack surfaces in environments, and agentic AI is adding to that quickly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, there needs to be some discipline around adoption.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0easy to feel pressure to deploy AI because everyone else is doing it, but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the wrong driver. The better question is not \u201care we using AI,\u201d\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0\u201cdo we understand what we\u2019ve deployed, what it can access, and how we would detect a problem?\u201d\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0harder to answer, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the question that\u00a0actually builds\u00a0trust.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=\u00a0\u00bbWhat is one leadership lesson that has shaped the way you lead through complexity and change? \u00a0\u00bb font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h4|text_align:left|color:%234c7a15″ google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb text_direction=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]Clarity is an act of respect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When things are complex or uncertain,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a temptation to hedge, to leave room for every\u00a0possible interpretation, to avoid saying something definitive. I understand the instinct. But people navigating change need to know where they stand. They need direction, even if not every detail is figured out. Ambiguity\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0protect anyone. It just pushes the stress down to the team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I learned early that being clear and\u00a0honest\u00a0about what I know, honest about what I\u00a0don\u2019t, and direct about what I need from the team\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0the harsh version of leadership.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the more respectful one. People can handle hard truths. What wears teams down is uncertainty without context.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
