Employee Community Involvement Spotlight: John Garofano, Sr. Director, Treasurer at Teranet

At Teranet, we believe in the strength of community and the lasting impact that comes from giving back. Our Employee Community Spotlight series shines a light on team members who go above and beyond to create meaningful change. This month, we’re proud to feature John Garofano, Senior Director and Treasurer at Teranet, who truly embodies what it means to be a compassionate and engaged community leader.

What do you do at Teranet?

Being the Treasurer (at Teranet for 4 years now), you can think of me as the “money guy” of the organization – being the person “on point” in raising cash, deploying it prudently, making sure it is on hand to pay our bills as they come due, dealing with our banks, and of course, making distributions to OMERS at year-end.

Princess Margaret for Cancer & Why they matter Can you provide more information about the organization/cause you support and how you connect with them?

As a cancer survivor, and someone who had one of three (cancer-related) surgeries done in connection with Princess Margaret, I readily identify with their mission and efforts to improve treatments and outcomes. I also know far too many people (unfortunately) who have also needed treatment at Princess Margaret.

Events hosted by Princess Margaret

  • Ride to Conquer Cancer: Since it’s inception, the Ride has raised over $300 million, driving critical advancements in cancer care and offering hope to patients and families around the world. These remarkable achievements are a testament to the dedication and generosity of our incredible community

  • Northern Pass to Conquer Cancer, Powered by Pass It Along Foundation: Northern Pass to Conquer Cancer, reached a remarkable milestone this year, raising $1.5 million and surpassing its ambitious $1.2 million target. The event set a new fundraising record and even sold out for the first time! Celebrated as Muskoka’s premiere cycling event, the Northern Pass continues to fuel life-saving cancer research through the dedication of its vibrant community.

  • Walk to Conquer Cancer: The 22nd annual Walk to Conquer Cancer brought together over 1,800 passionate walkers, raising an impressive $3.5 million to advance lifesaving cancer research.

  • Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer: Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, fuelled by Longo’s, set a new record with 140 teams raising $3.17 million to drive cancer research breakthroughs at The Princess Margaret. On game day, we didn’t count wins or goals scored – instead we came together for our shared goal of a future free from the fear of cancer.

What drove your passion to get involved?

As a person who has had radiation, chemotherapy and three surgeries, I have seen first-hand how devastating cancer can be for the patient as well as the caregiver. Thankfully, I have survived but I know others who haven’t, as well as others who are still struggling. I wanted to stretch myself to improve awareness and outcomes of this terrible disease.

How can others get involved and donate to the Princess Margaret Foundation?

Apart from financial assistance (which of course is always appreciated), there are many ways people can help in non-monetary means. Early screening and detection, greater awareness and advocacy, even simple support and encouragement – all these things will go a long way to making better outcomes! And don’t always judge a book by its cover – sometimes you never know what someone is dealing with physically on the inside.
